Insulation Contractors in Greenburgh, NY

Greenburgh is a town of 38,167 housing units that contains
six incorporated villages and four unincorporated hamlets, and almost everyone
who lives in it answers with a village or hamlet name when asked where they
live. Worth stating plainly, because it decides which set of numbers your house
actually belongs to.

its own government and its own housing stock. The unincorporated hamlets are

The bulk of our single-family work here is in the unincorporated belt, and
the Edgemont and Greenville side of it is the heart of the town’s post-war
stock: capes, expanded ranches, split levels and raised ranches from the 1950s
and 1960s, with a pre-war layer nearer the rail line and later infill on top.

The capes and story-and-a-half houses are the defining defect in this town,
and they are why plenty of people here have paid for insulation twice. A cape has
a short knee wall where the sloped ceiling meets the upstairs floor, and behind
that knee wall is an open triangular void running the length of the house. The
floor joist cavities pass straight under the knee wall and out to the eave with
nothing blocking them, so outdoor air enters at the soffit and travels beneath
the bedroom floor. The sloped ceiling bays above usually have no baffles and no
air barrier at all. The fix is knee-wall air sealing plus dense-packing
the slopes, not another six inches on the attic floor
— the attic
floor is not the surface losing the heat.

The ranches and splits are more conventional: roughly R-19 attics and
R-11 to R-13 walls
, settled loose fill, an attached garage with an
unsealed common wall and open bays above it, and on a split level a mid-level
floor cantilevered over that garage. The bypass list barely changes house to
house — dropped soffits over kitchen cabinets and hallways, plumbing
stacks, an uninsulated hatch in a bedroom closet, a whole-house-fan louver left
in place. The 1980s and later infill is a different job again: attic depth is
usually fine, the envelope is leaky, and the ducts sit in a vented attic.

We seal before we insulate

Insulation slows heat moving through a surface. It does nothing about air
moving through a gap. Pack a leaky attic with cellulose and you have a leaky
attic with cellulose in it — the air still moves, it just moves through
something softer.

In a Greenburgh cape that means blocking the floor cavities at the eave and
putting a real air barrier on the back of the knee wall before any material goes
in, because a batt stapled between knee-wall studs with open attic on the far
side is doing almost nothing. In a ranch or split it means the garage common
wall, the bays above it, the soffits, the stacks and the hatch, plus baffles at
every rafter bay. Then we insulate.

If a quote gives you a depth and never mentions air sealing, it is half a
job.

The federal Section 25C tax credit ended for anything placed in service after
31 December 2025. There is no federal insulation credit on a
2026 job.

Code and climate in Greenburgh

Add the pre-1940 stock to the 1950s wave and 46% of Greenburgh was standing
before 1960, before New York had an energy code at all. The current one is the
2025 Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State, in
force since 31 December 2025 and based on the 2024 IECC.

For new construction and additions it sets R-49 in the
ceiling, R-30 in wood-framed walls (or R-20 cavity plus R-5
continuous), R-30 in floors, and R-15 continuous or R-19 cavity in basement and
crawl space walls. Anyone quoting R-60 is quoting Connecticut’s code.
None of it applies to a house already standing. The code does not
require an existing building to be altered, only that an alteration not leave you
with less R-value than you had. The Department of Energy separately recommends
R-60 for a retrofit attic here, which is guidance, not law.

outdoor air runs in at the soffit, through the open floor cavities and out under
your bedroom. Blowing more material on the flat does not touch that. Blocking the
cavities and sealing the knee walls does.
