Insulation Contractors in Tarrytown, NY

Start with the hill, because the hill decides the scope. The pre-1940
Victorian and Queen Anne frame houses sit on steep terraced lots, which produces
walk-out basements, split entries, and floors posted or cantilevered over the
slope. That leaves far more envelope facing outdoors low down than a
flat-lot house has: partially below-grade walls, unconditioned crawl under the
downhill half, an exposed cantilevered floor with nothing but subfloor between
the living room and the weather. In these houses rim joist and floor cavity air sealing is often the
highest-return measure, not the attic
— the opposite of what most
owners expect, and of what most quotes propose.

Above that, roof complexity. Dormers, turrets and intersecting sloped
ceilings mean there is no continuous thermal boundary anywhere: the insulation
stops and starts, and the gaps between the runs are where the house loses. Every
converted third floor we open here has uninsulated knee walls and sloped ceiling
bays behind the finished surfaces. In the pre-1900 stock the framing is balloon
framing, stud bays running unbroken from sill to attic, and those bays have to be
dammed at the top plate first or you have insulated a chimney.

Then the multifamily. A large frame house cut into three or four flats
typically has one attic over all of it, party walls stopping at the top-floor
ceiling, and open joist bays connecting units, so sealing that attic plane is a
whole-building job rather than a per-apartment one. The 1980s condo and townhouse
clusters — 11.6% of the village — are different again: attic depth is
usually adequate, the envelope is leaky, and the ducts run through unconditioned
attic space. There, duct sealing beats a fourth inch of cellulose.

We seal before we insulate

Insulation slows heat moving through a surface. It does nothing about air
moving through a gap. Pack a leaky attic with cellulose and you have a leaky
attic with cellulose in it — the air still moves, it just moves through
something softer.

On a Tarrytown hillside house the sealing list runs bottom to top, not top
down: the rim joist, the band where a cantilever leaves the building, the crawl
space hatch, the garage ceiling built into the slope, then the top plates, the
chimney chase and the knee-wall access doors. In a balloon-framed house the stud
bays get blocked at the top plate first. It is unglamorous work and it decides
whether the insulation you paid for does anything. Then we insulate.

The federal Section 25C tax credit ended for anything placed in service after
31 December 2025. There is no federal insulation credit on a
2026 job.

Code and climate in Tarrytown

The median Tarrytown building went up in 1955 and 28.9% of the village
predates 1940, so almost none of it was built to an energy code, because there
was not one. The current code is the 2025 Energy Conservation
Construction Code of New York State

For new construction and additions it sets R-49 in the
ceiling, R-30 in wood-framed walls (or R-20 cavity plus R-5
continuous), R-30 in floors, and R-15 continuous or R-19 cavity in basement and
crawl space walls. Anyone quoting R-60 is quoting Connecticut’s code, not New
York’s. None of it applies to a house that is already standing.
The code does not require an existing building to be altered, only that an
alteration not leave you with less R-value than you had. The Department of Energy
separately recommends R-60 for a retrofit attic here, which is guidance, not
law.
