What Wall Insulation Is and How It Works

Wall insulation is material installed inside your exterior walls, and sometimes interior walls, to slow the transfer of heat. Heat always moves from warm to cold, so in winter it escapes outward and in summer it pushes in. Insulation resists that movement, keeping conditioned air where you want it.

A material's resistance to heat flow is measured by its R-value — the higher the number, the better the insulating performance per inch. But R-value is only part of the story. Air leaking around outlets, framing, and top plates can undermine even a high R-value wall, which is why proper air sealing and weatherization should go hand in hand with insulation.

Common Types of Wall Insulation

Different materials suit different walls, budgets, and goals. Here's how the most common options compare:

  • Closed-cell spray foam — roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch. The highest-performing option, it acts as both an air barrier and a vapor retarder, making it excellent for tight sealing and moisture control.
  • Open-cell spray foam — about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch. Softer and more affordable than closed-cell, it fills cavities completely and offers strong sound dampening.
  • Fiberglass batt — around R-3 to R-4 per inch. A cost-effective, widely used choice that performs well when cut and fitted carefully around wiring and boxes.
  • Blown-in cellulose — roughly R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch. Made largely from recycled paper, it's ideal for densely packing existing wall cavities without full demolition.
  • Mineral wool — about R-3 to R-4.2 per inch, with the added benefits of being fire-resistant and an excellent sound barrier.
  • Rigid foam board — approximately R-4 to R-6.5 per inch. Installed as continuous insulation on wall exteriors, it reduces thermal bridging through the framing.

New construction and renovations

When wall cavities are exposed, you have your pick of materials. Many homeowners choose spray foam or fiberglass and mineral wool batts in the stud bays, sometimes paired with exterior rigid board for continuous coverage and fewer cold spots.

Existing finished walls

You don't need to tear down drywall to improve older walls. Blown-in cellulose or fiberglass can be dense-packed through small access holes, filling gaps and settling voids that rob comfort from bedrooms and living spaces.
