Insulation Contractors in Ridgewood, NJ

37.3% of Ridgewood’s 9,166 housing units were standing before 1940, a higher pre-war share than Paramus, Fair Lawn or Glen Rock next door. The village was created on 20 November 1894, The Heights was developed between the 1890s and 1930, and the streets around the station at Garber Square filled in with colonials, foursquares and Tudors before the Depression. The median unit dates from 1950 only because the 1940s and 50s added another 34.6%; 89.7% of the village went up before New Jersey’s first statewide energy subcode of 1 January 1978.

The rest of the numbers make it a single-house town. 80.9% of units are detached, 83.9% are owner-occupied, two-unit buildings are 3.4% of the stock and three- to four-unit buildings 2.5%; 6.2% of units are in buildings of 20 or more, near Downtown and the station. Gas heats 84.7% of homes, oil 4.2%, electricity 9.3%. The 1960s and 70s added 17.8%, the 1980s and 90s 6.1%, and only 4.3% has been built since 2000, so the teardown cycle that reshaped Paramus has barely touched Ridgewood.

So the work here is two jobs. In the pre-war house it is the open stud bay behind plaster and lath, the attic floor with boards nailed over it, and the wiring that has to come out first. In the post-war cape and split it is the knee wall and the settled attic. Both start with air sealing, and in a village that took its name from its terrain, both include a rim joist on a slope.

The houses we insulate in Ridgewood

The pre-1940 third, 3,422 units, is the village around the station: The Heights between West Ridgewood and West Glen avenues, Floral Park, the streets off Downtown and East Ridgewood Avenue, Scrabbletown along the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook. Colonials, foursquares, Dutch colonials, Tudors and shingle houses, most of them balloon-framed or early platform frame with no blocking at the top of the wall. The stud bays run from the sill to the attic and are empty, or hold a few inches of mineral wool from the 1970s that has slumped to the bottom. The attic floor is plaster and lath with plank boards over the joists, and the chimney chase, the stair well and the plumbing wall are open straight through it. The basement is stone or early block, and the sill and rim have never been touched. Knob-and-tube wiring is normal in this cohort; it is removed by an electrician before any wall is filled.

The 1940s and 50s, 34.6% of the stock, went up wherever the pre-war village had left room, out toward the edges: Salem Ridge on the far side of Route 17, The Lawns around Hawes school in the south, the Old Country Club section by the Midland Park line. The house is a cape, a story-and-a-half, a ranch or an early split. The cape fails at the knee wall: insulation on the room side, no air barrier behind it, joist bays open to the eave under the bedroom floor, 2×6 slopes with no baffle, a shallow flat attic. The ranch fails across one long, low attic of settled loose-fill and unsealed bypasses. Many of these carry cement shingle siding, and we fill those walls from inside or by lifting shingles, never by drilling through.

The 1960s and 70s, 17.8%, are the splits and bi-levels on the last lots. Where a house of any era sits on the ridge of The View, on and west of the village’s highest point on Crest Road, the terrain shows in the assembly: a split stepping down a slope has a bedroom over the garage with open joist bays under it, a cantilevered bay, and a long rim joist exposed on the downhill side, with the wind off the ridge on all of it. The 1980s and 90s, 6.1%, are code-minimum colonials with R-19 batts in the attic and an air handler sitting on top of them.

Ridgewood also holds a cluster of 18th- and early-19th-century houses on the National Register: the Ackerman houses of the 1780s and about 1810, the Ackerman–Van Emburgh House of about 1785, the Westervelt–Cameron House of about 1767, the Van Dien, Vanderbeck and Rathbone–Zabriskie houses, and the Paramus Reformed Church Historic District along the Saddle River, whose congregation dates to 1725. Where the walls are stone, as at the Ackerman house of about 1810, there is no cavity and we will not drill them. The work is the garret under the roof, the attic floor, the cellar and rim, and the later frame wing.

The 310 two-unit buildings and 229 three- to four-unit buildings are scoped as one building, because the stair chase and the floor cavity between units run through every apartment. The 6.2% of units in buildings of 20 or more belong to a board or a landlord, and the useful call there is to them.

Plaster, lath and the open stud bay: the pre-1940 third

A balloon-framed Ridgewood colonial loses heat in a way a cape does not. The wall cavity is a chimney: open at the sill in the basement, open at the top into the attic, and connected to every floor cavity along the way. Air comes in at the rim, rises through the bays, and leaves through the attic floor, and the plaster walls feel cold because they are. Insulating the attic alone leaves the chimney running; insulating the walls alone leaves the attic floor open. The job is both, in order.

The walls get dense-packed cellulose. Under clapboard or wood shingle we drill from outside, under the siding, and patch; under stucco or brick veneer, or where the siding is cement shingle, we drill from inside and patch the plaster. Before either, the stud tops are blocked from the attic and the bays are checked for knob-and-tube, because dense-pack around live knob-and-tube is not something we will do. The attic floor comes next: lift enough plank boards to seal the chases and the top plates, then blow cellulose under and over the boards to the depth the roof allows. The stone basement gets a sealed sill and a foamed rim, not a foamed wall, unless it is dry and we have seen it dry.

We seal before we insulate

Insulation slows heat moving through a surface. It does nothing about air moving through a gap. Dense-pack a balloon-framed wall and leave the top of it open to the attic, and the wall still breathes.

In a pre-war Ridgewood colonial the sequence is: block the open stud tops and seal the chimney chase, stair well and plumbing wall at the attic floor; seal the attic hatch; seal the sill and rim in the basement; then dense-pack the walls and blow the attic. In a Salem Ridge or Lawns cape it is: block the joist bays under the knee wall at the eave, put an air barrier on the attic side of the knee wall, baffle the slopes, seal the top plates and the bath fan at the flat, then insulate.

If a quote specifies a depth of insulation and never mentions air sealing, it is half a job.

What insulation costs in Ridgewood

Most of our projects run between $3,500 and $12,500. In a pre-war house the number moves with the count of wall bays to dense-pack, how the siding lets us reach them, how much plank flooring has to come up in the attic, and whether the basement is stone. In a cape it moves with the feet of knee wall and eave to block and whether the slopes are filled. Open cell foam runs R-3.9 to R-4.2 per inch. Closed cell runs R-6.9 to R-7.1 per inch and also acts as a vapor retarder, which is why it costs more and why it is right in some assemblies and unnecessary in others. All products are manufactured in the United States and meet applicable building code and safety standards. After air sealing and insulating, homeowners typically save 20% or more on heating and cooling.

Insulation rebates in Ridgewood

Ridgewood is PSE&G territory for both electric and gas, so there is one program to deal with and one bill it lowers: 84.7% of the village heats with gas.

PSE&G Whole Home Energy Solutions offers up to $7,500 in rebates toward air sealing, insulation and related work, plus 0% on-bill repayment of up to $25,000, over 7 years for projects of $10,000 or less and 10 years above that or for income-qualified customers. It starts with a home energy assessment by a BPI-certified contractor participating in PSE&G’s program, and the contractor sets the fee for that assessment. PSE&G does not publish what each measure pays, so “up to $7,500” is as precise as anyone honest can be. The program is written for one- to four-unit homes the owner lives in, which is most of Ridgewood.

Separate from that, PSE&G’s Whole Home Energy Assessment is free: a no-cost walk-through for any PSE&G residential gas or electric customer in a home of fewer than five units, with small items such as LEDs, a smart thermostat and attic-hatch insulation installed on the spot. It is the lighter visit, not the audit that opens the rebate. PSE&G Home Weatherization installs insulation, air sealing and duct sealing at no cost for households between 250% and 400% of the federal poverty level. New Jersey Comfort Partners does the same at no cost for households at or below 250% of the federal poverty guidelines, $82,500 a year for a family of four, and refers homes heated with oil or propane to the state’s Office of Weatherization; 4.2% of Ridgewood still heats with oil.

The New Jersey IRA Home Energy Rebates have not launched. The state’s page says the programs are in development and not open for applications, so they are not available. The federal Section 25C tax credit ended for anything placed in service after 31 December 2025; there is no federal insulation credit on a 2026 job, whatever a flyer says. Code and climate in Ridgewood

89.7% of Ridgewood’s units went up before 1980, and nearly all of those predate New Jersey’s first statewide energy subcode of 1 January 1978: the 1920s colonial and the 1950s cape were both built with no insulation requirement at all. Bergen County is climate zone 5A; Essex, Hudson and Union to the south are 4A.

New Jersey adopted the 2024 IECC on 17 August 2026. For new construction it sets R-49 ceilings — the 2021 edition it replaced called for R-60, and a complete permit application filed under the old code is still accepted until about 16 February 2027 — with walls at R-30 cavity or R-20 plus R-5 continuous, windows at U-0.28, and air leakage of 3.0 air changes per hour at 50 pascals. R-49 is the number the state considers right for this climate, and it is what we design to.

Existing homes fall under New Jersey’s Rehabilitation Subcode. Insulating an attic or dense-packing a wall does not require bringing the rest of the house to code and does not require a blower-door test. Blown-in or batt insulation installed against the interior finish is ordinary maintenance with no permit; spray foam and other foam plastic insulation need a permit, which we pull as part of the job.

Our Ridgewood colonial still has knob-and-tube wiring. Can the walls be insulated?

Not until the knob-and-tube is gone from the bays being filled. Insulation packed around those conductors traps the heat they shed, and the electrical code does not allow it. An electrician does the removal, and it is a separate cost we will point you to before you commit to anything. Meanwhile the attic floor, the chases, the sill and the rim can all be sealed and insulated, and in a balloon-framed house that is most of the heat loss anyway, so the job does not have to wait on the electrician to start.
