Insulation Contractors in Patterson, NY

16.1% of Patterson’s 3,896 housing units have been built since 2000, the newest stock of any Putnam town we cover, and nearly all of it came in one decade: 15.1%, or 590 units, went up in the 2000s. Yet the town is old as well. 20.2% predates 1940, 24.3% is from the 1940s and 50s, 21.0% from the 1960s and 70s and 18.4% from the 1980s and 90s, and the median unit dates from 1966.

77.5% of units are detached houses and 82.9% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Oil is the fuel: 59.9% of homes burn fuel oil or kerosene, 22.3% heat with electricity, 7.2% with bottled propane and 8.6% with utility gas. That spread, from pre-war farmhouses to houses barely twenty years old, means two neighbors on the same road can need completely different jobs.

Patterson is Putnam County’s northeastern corner, with Dutchess County on its northern line and Connecticut on its eastern one. It was settled around 1720 in the Oblong, the strip New York and Connecticut both claimed until 1731, and the hamlet of Patterson, first called Frederickstown, was the first village in the county. Today the hamlet is the town seat, Metro-North’s Harlem Line stops at Patterson station in the town center, and around them are West Patterson, Haviland Hollow, Putnam Lake, Fields Corners and Steinbeck Corners.

The houses we insulate in Patterson

Patterson’s building history starts with its first settlers: the Hayt family built a house at The Elm in 1720, and Jacob Haviland settled Haviland Hollow in 1731. In the 788 units built before 1940 we expect farmhouses and village houses with timber or balloon framing, walls that were never insulated, a sill on a stone foundation and wiring that has to be checked before anything is blown in. Their attics are often floored and used for storage, so the insulation has to go under the boards or into the roof slopes.

The 1940s and 50s, 24.3% of the stock, are capes, small ranches and, near Putnam Lake by the Connecticut border, smaller houses that may have started as seasonal places. A cape fails at the knee wall and at the joist bays open to the eave; a house that was closed in over time fails at every joint between its original shell and its additions, and at a crawl space built for summer.

The 1960s and 70s raised ranches and splits, 21.0%, leak along the rim joist on the block wall, at the lower level beside the garage, and across a long attic of settled insulation with the top plates open. The 1980s and 90s colonials, 18.4%, have filled walls and leak at the attic plane, the slopes and the garage ceiling.

Patterson also has some larger buildings: 108 units in buildings of ten to nineteen, 89 in buildings of twenty to forty-nine and 105 in buildings of fifty or more. Buildings like those, and institutional housing such as the residence complex at the Watchtower Educational Center, are envelopes managed by their owners, not homeowner retrofits, and we say so when someone asks.

59.9% on oil shapes the payback. An oil customer sees the saving from sealing and insulating as fewer deliveries rather than a lower meter reading, and the same work usually earns back faster in an oil-heated house than in a gas-heated one. Gas reaches only parts of the town, so for most houses the question is how to burn less oil, not whether to switch.

If your Patterson house went up in the 2000s

The 590 units built in the 2000s went up under the energy codes of their day, so their walls are full, and blowing more into them is not the job. What fails in those houses is less obvious, and it is mostly air and ducts.

The furnace or air handler often sits in the vented attic, with its ductwork running through the attic, outside the insulated house, and every leaky joint heats or cools the attic instead of the bedrooms. The bonus room over the garage has knee walls with batts and no air barrier behind them, and a floor over the garage whose joist bays are open at the ends. Tray and cathedral ceilings were built without baffles, so the insulation in them is wind-washed. The two-story foyer or family room has a tall wall backing onto an attic space. Recessed lights and bath fans open the top floor into the attic, and some of the fans vent straight into it.

That is an air sealing and duct job: seal and insulate the ducts or bring them inside, seal the air handler platform, close the bonus room’s knee walls and the garage-floor bays, baffle the slopes, vent the fans outside, then top up the attic. It is also where the comfort complaints in these houses come from, and why the room over the garage is too hot in July and too cold in January.

We seal before we insulate

Insulation slows heat moving through a surface. It does nothing about air moving through a gap. Add another foot of insulation over a 2000s attic whose ducts are leaking and whose bath fans blow into it, and most of the problem is still there.

In an older Patterson farmhouse the order is: sill and rim on the stone foundation, then the wall bays blocked at top and bottom, then the attic floor or slopes. In a 2000s house it is: ducts and air handler platform, top plates and ceiling penetrations, the bonus room’s knee walls and the floor over the garage, the fans vented out, and only then the added depth.

If a quote specifies a depth of insulation and never mentions air sealing, it is half a job.

What insulation costs in Patterson

Open cell foam runs R-3.9 to R-4.2 per inch. Closed cell runs R-6.9 to R-7.1 per inch and also acts as a vapor retarder, which is why it costs more and why it is right in some assemblies and unnecessary in others. All products are manufactured in the United States and meet applicable building code and safety standards. ENERGY STAR says sealing air leaks and adding insulation can save up to 10% on annual energy bills.

Insulation rebates in Patterson

NYSEG supplies Patterson’s electricity, Putnam Lake included, and NYSEG is also the gas company where gas exists. Gas lines reach only parts of Patterson; many homes heat with oil, propane or electricity. The electric company sets the program lane in New York, and for a NYSEG customer that lane is NYSERDA.

NYSERDA’s Comfort Home program pays $2,500 toward sealing and insulating the attic and rim joist, $3,000 if walls and floors are added, and $2,000 more toward ENERGY STAR windows, through a NYSERDA-approved Comfort Home contractor. It is for market-rate homes of one to four units whose owners pay the System Benefits Charge on their electric bill, and a home must meet the conditions of the whole package to be paid. Comfort Home is open in 2026. It closes when New York’s utilities launch their new weatherization programs, planned for around January 2027, so a homeowner who wants Comfort Home money should not wait.

Income-eligible owners and renters can turn to NYSERDA’s EmPower+, which pays for air sealing and insulation at no cost up to $14,000 for lower-income households, or half the cost up to $7,000 for moderate-income households, through an EmPower+ contractor. In Putnam County a household of four is in the no-cost tier at $97,200 or less and the half-cost tier under $129,600.

NYSEG has offered its own insulation and air-sealing incentive for one- to four-unit homes; ask us or NYSEG what is open when you call. NYSERDA’s Green Jobs–Green New York program lends $1,500 to $25,000 over 5, 10 or 15 years. New York’s heat pump program is moving to reward — and from 2028 require — a sealed and insulated house before it pays for a heat pump; its 2026–2030 plan describes a Weatherized Tier that a house built after 2010 meets on age alone, while a 2000s house would have to qualify through a weatherization program or an assessment. These programs pay through their own participating contractors, so check eligibility on the MyEnergy portal before signing.

The federal insulation tax credit (Section 25C) ended for work placed in service after 31 December 2025, so there is no federal insulation credit on a 2026 job. New York has no state tax credit for insulation. Our New York and New Jersey rebate guide lays out the rest.

Code and climate in Patterson

65.5% of Patterson’s housing was built before 1980. New York’s first statewide energy code took effect on 1 January 1979, so the farmhouses, capes and raised ranches went up without one, while the 2000s houses were built under codes that already required filled walls. Putnam County is Climate Zone 5, and so is Dutchess across the northern town line.

Since 31 December 2025 the 2025 Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State governs new building. In Zone 5 it calls for R-49 ceilings, or R-38 across the entire ceiling where the full uncompressed height carries over the wall top plate at the eaves; R-30 floors; basement and crawl space walls at R-15 continuous, R-19, or R-13 plus R-5 continuous; U-0.27 windows; and air leakage no higher than 3.0 air changes per hour at 50 pascals.

A house already built does not have to bring its untouched parts up to that table, and the code does not require a blower door test when you insulate an existing home; a cavity the work exposes is insulated to full depth. ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for an uninsulated attic in this climate and R-49 where 3 to 4 inches are already down.

Our Patterson colonial was built in 2004. Why is the room over the garage hot in summer and cold in winter?

Because it is wrapped on almost every side by unheated space. The floor sits over an unheated garage with joist bays open at the ends, the side walls are knee walls backing onto attic space with no air barrier behind the batts, and the ceiling is a slope or a small flat attic, often with a duct run through it. We seal the joist bays, put an air barrier on the knee walls, seal and insulate the duct, and baffle and fill the ceiling. The walls elsewhere are usually fine.
