Insulation Contractors in Yorktown, NY

Yorktown is the most straightforwardly postwar town in Westchester. Only
9.0% of it predates 1940 and 55.5% of every
housing unit went up between 1950 and 1979 — ranches, raised ranches,
splits and bi-levels, then 1980s colonials. We can usually guess what is in the
attic before we open the hatch.

One thing to check first: the name on your electric bill. Yorktown is split
between two utilities and it changes what you can claim by up to $2,000.

The houses we insulate in Yorktown

People picture Westchester as pre-war and Yorktown proves otherwise. Of its
13,599 units the median was built in 1968,
85.6% are owner-occupied and 74.1% detached.
The decades stack almost evenly: 19.1% in the 1950s, 19.6% in the 1960s, 16.8%
in the 1970s, 14.6% in the 1980s.

So the recurring finding is not a crumbling antique. It is a 1960s or 1970s
house with R-11 to R-13 in the walls and about R-19 over the
ceiling
— code-compliant the year it went up, roughly a third of
what a new house here would be built to now. Nothing failed; the bar moved.

The split levels have a weak point most people miss. Between the low attic
over the lower wing and the higher attic over the bedrooms sits a short framed
wall. That wall is the outside of the house, and in most splits we open it is
drywall on studs — no insulation, no air barrier, sometimes a duct trunk
straight through it. The two attics trade air behind your bedroom wall all
winter.

Raised ranches and bi-levels fail lower down. The lower level sits half below
grade, leaving exposed foundation and a framed rim wrapping a finished room,
usually with nothing in either. Add a bare garage ceiling under the bedroom wing
and the cold room is down there.

The 1980s colonials leak rather than lack depth. R-30 batts laid the year the
house went up, then open top plates above the second-floor partitions, wire and
pipe chases, dropped soffits open to the attic, an unsealed knee door into the
space over the garage, and batts squashed flat at the eaves with no baffles. If
the air handler lives up there, sealing the ducts beats any depth added above
it.

The work is ordinary: seal the plane, sheathe the wall between attic levels,
baffle at the eaves, bring the flat to depth, close the rim joist and the garage
ceiling.

We seal before we insulate

Insulation slows heat moving through a surface. It does nothing about air
moving through a gap. Pack a leaky attic with cellulose and you have a leaky
attic with cellulose in it — the air still moves, it just moves through
something softer.

In a Yorktown split that is not a general principle, it is why the back
bedroom never warms up. The wall between the two attic planes is open, so the
spaces trade air across it. Sheathe it, seal the edges, and the insulation on
both sides starts working. Then we insulate.

If a quote gives you a depth and never mentions air sealing, it is half a
job.

What insulation costs in Yorktown

Most of our projects run between $3,500 and $12,500. A
single-plane ranch attic with a chase to close sits near the bottom. A split sits
higher for a reason unrelated to square footage: three attic spaces, each with
its own access, and a framed wall to air seal.

On payback: 58.2% of Yorktown heats with fuel oil, and
ENERGY STAR says sealing air leaks and adding insulation can save up to 10% on
annual energy bills. An oil customer counts that in deliveries per winter.

Open cell foam runs R-3.9 to R-4.2 per inch. Closed cell runs R-6.9 to R-7.1
per inch and also acts as a vapor retarder, which is why it costs more and why
it is right in some assemblies and unnecessary in others. All products are
manufactured in the United States and meet applicable building code and safety
standards.

Insulation rebates in Yorktown

This is the part people get wrong. Yorktown sits on the boundary
between two electric utilities
— the town’s own website says so
— and the line does not follow the town line. Part of Yorktown is
NYSEG, the rest Con Edison. Con Edison is the
gas utility either way, and with 21.0% of the town on utility gas against 58.2%
on oil and 4.2% on propane, much of Yorktown is not on a gas main.
Check the name on your electric bill first.

NYSEG customers can take up to $2,000 in
insulation and air sealing incentives, deducted directly from the cost of the
work rather than claimed back later. NYSEG accepts customers heating with gas,
oil, propane or another delivered fuel, and with heat pumps or electric
resistance, so being off the gas main does not disqualify you. In a town that is
58.2% oil, that is a real advantage.

Con Edison customers have no weatherization program open at
the moment; Weather Ready is not accepting applications.

$3,000 with wall and floor insulation added,
$2,000 more toward ENERGY STAR windows afterwards, contractor
on NYSERDA’s Comfort Home list. At or below 80% of area median income,

The federal Section 25C tax credit ended for anything placed in service after
31 December 2025. There is no federal insulation credit on a
2026 job.

Code and climate in Yorktown

That 55.5% of Yorktown built between 1950 and 1979 went up before energy
performance was something anyone measured. The current rulebook is the
2025 Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State, in
force since 31 December 2025 and based on the 2024 IECC.
Westchester is climate zone 4.

For new construction and additions it sets R-49 in the
ceiling, R-30 in wood-framed walls (or R-20 plus R-5
continuous), R-30 in floors, and R-15 continuous or R-19 cavity in basement and
crawl space walls. Anyone quoting R-60 is quoting Connecticut’s code.
None of it applies to a house already standing. The code
expressly does not require an existing building to be altered, only that an
alteration not leave you with less than you had. ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for a retrofit attic here, which is guidance, not
law.

finished, occupied room, and in most of them nothing is in that band at all. Add
a bare garage ceiling under the bedrooms and you have your answer. It is a
smaller job than an attic and it often fixes the complaint.
