Insulation Contractors in Plattekill, NY

1,012 of Plattekill’s 4,696 housing units are mobile homes. That is 21.6% of the town, more than one home in five and the highest share of any Ulster County town we cover. An honest account of insulating Plattekill has to start with a house built in a factory and set on a lot.

The rest of the town is a mix. 55.9% of units are detached houses, 2.9% are townhouses or duplex halves, 5.9% sit in two-unit buildings and 10.1% in buildings of three or four. The median unit dates from 1977: 22.8% went up in the 1970s alone, 16.8% in 2000–2009 and 13.3% in 1939 or earlier, and 56.2% predates 1980. 67.6% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Fuel oil or kerosene heats 57.2% of homes, electricity 17.2%, bottled propane 13.7% and utility gas 7.0%.

Plattekill lies in the southeastern part of Ulster County, directly north of the Town of Newburgh in Orange County. Lloyd is to the north, Shawangunk and Gardiner to the west, and the eastern line follows the Marlboro Mountain ridge along the Town of Marlborough. The Thruway, US 44 with NY 55, and NY 32 cross the town. Ardonia and Clintondale sit on Routes 44 and 55 in the north, Modena at the junction with Route 32, New Hurley with Flint to its east and Modena Gardens to its northeast, and the hamlet of Plattekill and Sylva on Route 32 just above the Orange County line. The town was set off from Marlborough in 1800 and takes its name from a stream, the Platte Kill.

The houses we insulate in Plattekill

The 1970s built 1,073 units, more of Plattekill than any other decade. Among the site-built houses of that decade the raised ranch and the split-level are the common forms. Their walls hold three and a half inches of fiberglass, often stapled with gaps at the edges, and their attics a few inches of batts or loose fill. Their weak point is the lower level: a garage and family room set half into the ground, a band joist between the levels that is open to outside air, and a bedroom over the garage whose floor stays cold all winter.

The 790 units from 2000–2009 and the 174 from the 2010s already have full walls. The work in them is the ducts in the attic, the bonus room over the garage and the rim joist. The 557 units from the 1980s and 478 from the 1990s sit in between, with R-11 to R-13 walls, R-19 to R-30 attics, and leaks at the top plates, the recessed lights and the attic hatch.

The 625 units from 1939 or earlier are the farm and hamlet houses. The Shuart-Van Orden Stone House was built in 1740 and the Reformed Dutch Church of New Hurley in the 1830s, both now on the National Register. A frame farmhouse from the 1800s here usually means walls with nothing in them and bays open from cellar to attic, a sill resting on a stone foundation, and a string of additions each with an attic of its own. The 362 units from the 1950s and 269 from the 1940s are mostly capes and small ranches, failing at the knee wall and across the attic floor.

The 474 units in buildings of three or four and the 279 in two-unit buildings are scoped as whole buildings, whether or not the owner lives in one of the apartments. A shared attic, a shared cellar and the stair between floors make one air path, and insulating one apartment while the rest of the building leaks does little.

Then the heat. 57.2% of Plattekill homes burn oil and 13.7% propane, and the town has little or no utility gas service, so most heat arrives by truck. Another 17.2% heat with electricity. Delivered fuel, and electricity used for baseboard or furnace heat, usually cost more for the same warmth than utility gas, so sealing and insulating tends to earn back its cost sooner here than in a town on gas.

One home in five is a mobile home: where foam belongs and where it does not

A spray foam contractor could be tempted to foam everything under a mobile home. We do not, and we would question any quote that proposes it. The underside of a mobile home carries the water lines, the drains and the heating ducts, all inside the belly and held up by a thin bottom board. Foam sprayed over the lot of it buries the plumbing and ducts where nobody can reach them for a repair, and hides the next leak until the floor has rotted.

What works under the floor is the conventional repair. The torn bottom board is patched or replaced, the duct joints and crossover are sealed, the belly is filled again with blown insulation, and the water lines stay on the warm side of it. Foam has its place at the edges instead: closed cell foam seals the joint where the home meets a site-built addition, the rim of an entry or porch room, and the floor of an addition built over open ground, where there are no pipes to bury.

Above, it depends on the roof. A home with its original low, curved roof has a shallow cavity that can only be filled from the edge or from above. A home that has been given a roof-over, a pitched roof framed on top of the original, has gained an attic, and that space can be sealed and insulated over the old roof. Before any of it, look for soft spots in the floor: they mean a past leak, and that decking is repaired first.

Manufactured homes are among the homes NYSERDA’s Comfort Home lists as eligible, and the program’s floor target in Climate Zone 6 is specific: R-30, with a minimum of R-19 or the cavity filled to capacity. That target, and the rule that a home must meet the conditions of the entire package, are worth confirming before the belly is opened.

We seal before we insulate

Insulation resists heat flowing through a material. Air leaking through a hole takes the heat along with it. A Plattekill raised ranch can have new insulation to full depth in its attic and still have a cold family room, because the band joist between the floors is open to the outside.

In that house the sequence is: seal and insulate the band joist between the levels and the rim of the lower level, with closed cell foam in each bay; seal the wall shared with the garage and the garage ceiling, and fill the joist bays under the bedroom above; then go to the attic, seal the top plates, the plumbing and wiring holes, the bath fan and the hatch, baffle the eaves, and bring the attic to depth.

If a quote specifies a depth of insulation and never mentions air sealing, it is half a job.

What insulation costs in Plattekill

Most of our projects run between $3,500 and $12,500. A mobile home usually sits toward the lower end: bottom board, belly and ducts, the seam with any addition, and more if a roof-over attic is included. A 1970s raised ranch is priced on its band joists, garage ceiling and attic; a 2000s house on its attic ducts and bonus-room floor; a three- or four-unit building as one building, attic, cellar and stair included.

Open cell foam runs R-3.9 to R-4.2 per inch. Closed cell runs R-6.9 to R-7.1 per inch and also acts as a vapor retarder, which is why it costs more and why it is right in some assemblies and unnecessary in others. All products are manufactured in the United States and meet applicable building code and safety standards. ENERGY STAR says sealing air leaks and adding insulation can save up to 10% on annual energy bills.

Insulation rebates in Plattekill

Plattekill is Central Hudson electric territory, and the town has little or no utility gas service. Clintondale reaches over into Lloyd and Marlborough, where gas service differs, but the electric company is Central Hudson in all three. Central Hudson customers use NYSERDA’s Comfort Home for insulation incentives, or EmPower+ if the household is income-eligible.

Comfort Home pays $2,500 toward sealing and insulating the attic and rim joist, $3,000 if walls and floors are added, and $2,000 more toward ENERGY STAR windows, through a NYSERDA-approved Comfort Home contractor. It is for Con Edison, NYSEG, Central Hudson and Orange & Rockland electric customers in market-rate homes of one to four units, manufactured homes and townhomes included. Comfort Home is open in 2026. It closes when the new utility programs start around January 2027, so a homeowner who wants Comfort Home money should not wait.

NYSERDA’s EmPower+ serves income-eligible owners and renters: at no cost up to $14,000 for lower-income households, or half the cost up to $7,000 for moderate-income households in our area, through an EmPower+ contractor.

Both programs pay through their own participating contractors, so confirm eligibility and approved contractors on the MyEnergy portal before work begins. The federal insulation tax credit, Section 25C, ended for work placed in service after 31 December 2025; there is no federal insulation credit on a 2026 job, and New York has no state tax credit for insulation. Code and climate in Plattekill

56.2% of Plattekill’s housing was built before 1980. New York’s first statewide energy code took effect on 1 January 1979, so most of the 1,073 units from the 1970s went up before it. Ulster County is Climate Zone 6.

For a site-built house, the 2025 Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State has set the terms since 31 December 2025: R-49 ceilings, or R-38 across the whole ceiling where its full uncompressed height continues over the wall top plates at the eaves; R-30 floors; basement and crawl space walls of R-15 continuous, R-19, or R-13 plus R-5 continuous; U-0.27 windows; and no more than 2.5 air changes per hour at 50 pascals for a new home, against 3.0 in Zones 4 and 5. Mobile homes are built in a factory to a federal manufactured-housing standard rather than to this table.

For a house already standing, unaltered parts of the building do not have to comply, New York does not require a blower door test when you insulate an existing home, and wall or roof cavities opened by the work get filled to full depth. ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for an attic with no insulation in Zones 5 and 6, and R-49 when 3 to 4 inches are already there.

The belly holds the water lines, drains and heating ducts, and foam sprayed over them makes every future repair a demolition job and hides leaks until the floor rots. The better fix is to repair the bottom board, seal the ducts, refill the belly with blown insulation and keep the pipes on the warm side.
