Why Basements Need Special Consideration

Unlike an attic, a basement sits partly or fully below grade, so the walls stay in contact with cool, damp soil year-round. That means the best basement material has to resist heat loss and manage moisture. A product that traps water against the foundation or invites mold does more harm than good, so how a material handles vapor matters as much as its R-value.

The Top Basement Insulation Materials

  • Closed-cell spray foam — roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch, and it doubles as both an air barrier and a vapor barrier. Sprayed directly on foundation walls and rim joists, it seals gaps and resists moisture, which makes it our go-to for damp below-grade spaces.
  • Rigid foam board — continuous panels that insulate against bare concrete with strong moisture resistance. They work well on foundation walls, often paired with a framed wall, and reduce the thermal bridging you get from framing alone.
  • Open-cell spray foam — about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch. It air-seals well and suits rim joists and framed interior walls, though it is more vapor-open than closed-cell.
  • Mineral wool — roughly R-3 to R-4.2 per inch, naturally water-repellent and fire-resistant, a solid choice inside framed basement walls.
  • Fiberglass batt — about R-3 to R-4 per inch and budget-friendly, but it must stay dry, so it belongs only in finished, moisture-controlled framed walls — never pressed against bare concrete.
  • Cellulose — roughly R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch, useful in some framed applications when it is kept dry.

Air Sealing Comes First
