The Pros and Cons Worth Weighing
Batt insulation earns its popularity plainly, but it is not the right answer for every part of a home.
The advantages:
- Cost-effective per unit of R-value, making it budget-friendly for large, open framing bays
- Well suited to standard, evenly spaced framing
- Mineral wool versions add meaningful fire and sound resistance
The trade-offs:
- Installation quality is everything. Gaps, compression around wiring, and unfilled corners can sharply reduce real-world R-value. Batts must be cut to fit and settled snugly against every surface.
- Batts do not stop air movement. On their own they are not an air barrier, so they perform best when paired with proper air sealing and weatherization.
- They are less effective in irregular cavities or around obstructions, where a spray-applied product may seal more completely.
