Spray Foam vs. Rigid Foam

Choosing between spray foam and rigid foam board is one of the most common decisions homeowners face when upgrading insulation. Both are high-performance foam products, but they behave very differently once they are inside your walls, attic, or basement.

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam arrives as a liquid and expands in place, sealing gaps, cracks, and irregular cavities that batts and boards simply cannot reach. It comes in two forms, and the difference matters.

Closed-Cell vs. Open-Cell

  • Closed-cell foam (~R-6 to R-7 per inch): the highest R-value of any common insulation. It is dense and rigid, acts as both an air barrier and a vapor barrier, resists water, and even adds stiffness to a wall. Ideal for rim joists, crawl spaces, basement walls, and unvented roof decks.
  • Open-cell foam (~R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch): softer, lighter, and vapor-permeable. It excels at air sealing and sound dampening at a lower cost, making it a popular choice for interior walls and attic slopes.

Because spray foam bonds to the surrounding surfaces, it is the strongest option for stopping air leakage — the source of a large share of wasted energy in older suburban homes. The trade-offs are a higher upfront cost and the need for professional installation; it is not a DIY material.

Rigid Foam Board

Rigid foam is manufactured in flat panels that are cut to fit and fastened into place. It is the go-to product for adding a continuous layer of insulation across a surface, which interrupts thermal bridging — the heat loss that travels through studs and framing.

  • Expanded polystyrene (EPS), ~R-4 per inch: the most affordable board.
  • Extruded polystyrene (XPS), ~R-5 per inch: moisture-resistant and common below grade.
  • Polyisocyanurate (polyiso), ~R-6 to R-6.5 per inch: the highest-performing board, often foil-faced for use above roof decks and on exterior walls.

Rigid foam shines as exterior sheathing, under basement slabs, against foundation walls, and on cathedral ceilings. It delivers strong R-value per inch, holds up to moisture, and installs as a clean, uniform layer. Its limitation is that boards must be carefully sealed at every seam and edge; on their own they do not stop air movement the way spray foam does, so they are frequently paired with taped joints or a spray-foam air seal.

Which Is Right for Your Home?

There is no single winner — the best choice depends on where the insulation is going and what problem you are solving.

  • Choose spray foam when you need to seal air leaks, insulate odd-shaped or hard-to-reach cavities, or create a vapor barrier in a crawl space or rim joist.
  • Choose rigid foam when you want a continuous, thermal-bridge-free layer over a flat surface like an exterior wall, foundation, or roof deck.
  • Use both together in many homes — closed-cell foam to seal, rigid board to add continuous R-value.

For context, both foams outperform traditional materials per inch: fiberglass batt runs about R-3 to R-4, cellulose about R-3.2 to R-3.8, and mineral wool about R-3 to R-4.2 while adding fire and sound resistance. The right combination is what turns a drafty house into an efficient one.
