Spray Foam Insulation: Closed-Cell

Closed-cell spray foam is the densest insulation we install, with the highest R-value per inch of our products, for walls, roofs and crawl spaces — a single material that stops heat, air, and moisture at the same time. How Closed-Cell Spray Foam Works

Spray foam arrives as two liquid components that are combined at the tip of the applicator. When they meet, they react and expand in seconds, filling gaps before hardening into a rigid, dense plastic. The term closed-cell describes the foam's structure: millions of tiny cells sealed shut and packed tightly against one another, which is what gives the material its strength and its resistance to air and water.

That density is also why closed-cell delivers so much insulating value per inch. It rates at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch — the products we install are rated at R-6.9 to R-7.1 per inch. For comparison, open-cell spray foam runs about R-3.9 to R-4.2 per inch, and standard fiberglass batt about R-3 to R-4 per inch. In practice that means closed-cell can reach a target R-value in roughly half the thickness of batt, which matters in tight rafter bays and shallow wall cavities.

Where It Is Used in a Home — and What Else It Does

Because closed-cell handles several jobs at once, it fits the parts of a house that ask the most of insulation:

  • Rim and band joists — one of the leakiest spots in most basements, sealed and insulated in a single pass.
  • Crawl spaces and basement walls — its resistance to moisture makes it well suited to below-grade and damp areas.
  • Unvented roof decks and cathedral ceilings — bringing the attic inside the home's conditioned envelope.
  • Exterior and knee walls — high R-value where framing depth is limited.

Beyond insulating, closed-cell acts as an air barrier and, at sufficient thickness, a vapor barrier — cutting the drafts and moisture movement that ordinary batt insulation lets pass through. Sprayed against a roof deck or wall sheathing, its rigidity even adds a measure of structural stiffness. This all-in-one performance is why it is a cornerstone of serious air sealing and weatherization.

The advantages

  • The highest R-value per inch of the products we install.
  • Air and vapor control built into a single product — fewer separate materials and steps.
  • It does not sag, settle, or lose thickness over the years.
  • It resists water, so it will not become a food source for mold the way wet organic materials can.

The trade-offs

  • A higher up-front cost than open-cell or fiberglass — though the energy savings and air sealing often offset it over time.
  • It is rigid and cannot be stuffed into irregular cavities the way batt can, so skilled application matters.
  • Because it seals a home so tightly, added mechanical ventilation is sometimes needed to keep fresh air moving.

The installation itself

Our crews mask off finished surfaces, apply the foam in controlled lifts, and trim any excess once it cures — which happens within minutes. The work area needs to be vacated during spraying and for a short ventilation window afterward, typically the same day, and we walk you through the timeline before we begin. Temperature, mix ratio, and thickness all affect how the foam performs, which is exactly why closed-cell is a job for trained installers rather than a weekend project.
