How Fiberglass Batt Insulation Works

Fiberglass is made from fine strands of spun glass woven into a fluffy blanket. It slows heat transfer by trapping millions of tiny pockets of still air within those fibers — still air is a poor conductor of heat, so the more of it a material holds in place, the better it insulates.

Batts come pre-cut to fit standard framing cavities and are rated by R-value, the measure of resistance to heat flow. Fiberglass batt delivers roughly R-3 to R-4 per inch. That's why a standard 3.5-inch batt for a 2x4 wall is rated around R-13, and a deeper 5.5-inch batt for a 2x6 wall reaches about R-19 to R-21. In attics, where depth isn't limited by framing, batts are layered to reach the R-49 to R-60 that modern energy codes call for in our climate.

Its limits matter just as much. Fiberglass insulates, but it does not stop air movement on its own. Gaps, compression around wiring and pipes, and poorly fitted edges all let air slip past and quietly erode real-world performance. That's the key difference between batt and spray foam. Closed-cell spray foam delivers about R-6 to R-7 per inch — the products we install are rated at R-6.9 to R-7.1 — and doubles as an air and vapor barrier, while open-cell foam runs about R-3.9 to R-4.2 per inch and is more breathable. Fiberglass simply fills a cavity; it doesn't seal it.
