To Stop Drafts: Backdraft Dampers

A backdraft damper is a simple one-way valve inside your home's exhaust ducts — it lets stale air out but blocks cold outdoor air, insects, and odors from pushing back in. When one sticks open, warps, or wears out, it quietly becomes one of the biggest sources of winter drafts that most homeowners never think to check.

How a Backdraft Damper Works

Every exhaust fan in your house — bathroom vents, kitchen range hoods, clothes dryer ducts — pushes air outside through a duct that terminates at a wall or roof cap. That duct is an open hole in your building envelope. A backdraft damper closes it when the fan is off.

Most dampers are one of two types:

  • Gravity (flapper) dampers use lightweight flaps that swing open when the fan runs and fall shut under their own weight when it stops.
  • Spring-loaded dampers add tension so the flap seals more firmly, which resists wind pressure and gives a tighter close.

The trouble is that these are moving parts exposed to grease, lint, and weather. Over the years a flap can rust, stick partway open on debris, or lose its spring. Once it no longer seals, wind and stack effect drive cold air straight down the duct and into your rooms — a draft you can often feel standing under a bathroom fan on a windy day.

Where Failed Dampers Let Drafts In

When we run an energy audit, these are the spots we check first for damper failure:

  • Bathroom exhaust fans — often the worst offenders, since builders frequently install cheap flapper dampers that warp.
  • Kitchen range hoods — grease buildup can glue a damper open or shut.
  • Clothes dryer vents — lint clogs the flap, which also becomes a fire and pest concern.
  • Whole-house and attic fans — large openings that leak a large amount of air when their dampers or covers fail.
  • Through-wall vents — older wall caps may have no working damper at all.

Replacing or upgrading a failed damper is inexpensive relative to the comfort it restores, and it stops a leak that runs every hour your heat is on.

Dampers Are One Layer — Sealing and Insulation Do the Rest

A working damper only closes the ducted holes. Real draft-proofing means sealing the whole envelope, then insulating it properly. Air sealing tackles the gaps around rim joists, top plates, recessed lights, and penetrations; insulation then slows heat loss through the sealed shell.

Material choice matters because both air resistance and R-value per inch vary:

  • Closed-cell spray foam — about R-6 to R-7 per inch and acts as its own air and vapor barrier, which is why it doubles as a sealing layer.
  • Open-cell spray foam — roughly R-3.9 to R-4.2 per inch and air-sealing, though it is vapor-permeable.
  • Fiberglass batt — about R-3 to R-4 per inch; effective only when the cavity is also sealed and gap-free.
  • Cellulose — roughly R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch, dense-packed into cavities.
  • Mineral wool — about R-3 to R-4.2 per inch, with strong fire and sound resistance.

A damper you replace without sealing the rest of the house still leaves dozens of smaller leaks working against your furnace. Handled together, the difference in comfort — and on your heating bill — is what makes weatherization worth doing.
