A wood-burning fireplace is a wonderful feature, but the chimney above it is essentially a permanent hole in your home's ceiling. When the damper is open, worn, or leaking, that hole can pull heated air out of your living space all winter long — and drive your furnace to work overtime.
Why Your Fireplace Acts Like an Open Window
Homes lose heat through what building scientists call the stack effect. Warm air is buoyant, so it naturally rises and escapes through the highest openings in a house, while cold outdoor air is drawn in lower down to replace it. A chimney is the tallest, most direct vertical shaft in most homes, which makes it the single easiest path for your paid-for heat to leave.
The only thing standing in the way is usually a throat damper — a thin metal plate seated on a metal frame just above the firebox. Because metal expands, contracts, warps, and rusts, these dampers rarely close tightly after a few seasons. Even a damper that looks shut can leave a gap that leaks continuously, whether or not you ever light a fire. Glass doors help, but they slow the leak rather than stop it.
How We Cap the Draft
Sealing a chimney draft is about closing the leak at the right place with the right materials. Depending on your setup, that can include:
- A top-sealing damper. Mounted at the top of the flue with a rubber gasket, it seals far better than a warped throat damper and keeps rain and animals out too. A cable lets you open it from below when you want a fire.
- An insulated chimney plug. For a fireplace you rarely use, a removable, fitted plug blocks the throat and stops the airflow immediately.
- Air sealing the chimney chase. Where a chimney runs up through the attic or an exterior wall, the framed cavity around it — the "chase" — is often wide open to unconditioned space. We seal those gaps so warm house air can't wash up around the flue.
Because a working flue gets hot, the materials near it matter. We maintain the required clearance to combustibles and use non-combustible mineral wool (about R-3 to R-4.2 per inch) with fire-rated sealants around the pipe itself, rather than plastic foam. Farther out, on the chase walls that face the outdoors, standard insulation earns its keep — closed-cell spray foam delivers roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch and doubles as an air and vapor barrier, while fiberglass batt (about R-3 to R-4 per inch) or cellulose (about R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch) are cost-effective where a hot flue is not a factor.
