Insulation Contractors in Blooming Grove, NY

That one fact shapes the work here more than any house type does, because in an oil or propane house every leak sealed is a delivery that does not come.

Mountain Lodge Park, on Schunemunk Mountain, began as a summer community, and a house there that is now lived in all year may still have the bones of a summer place: a floor over open air or a shallow crawl space, a roof with little depth for insulation, and additions joined on with open seams. Mobile homes, 2.5% of units, are a separate conversation about the belly under the floor, so call before booking a visit.

Oil heat, propane and what sealing is worth here

With 42.7% of homes on oil and 10.6% on propane, Blooming Grove is a town where the case for air sealing is written on the delivery slip. Oil and propane usually cost more per unit of heat than utility gas, so the same reduction in air leakage pays back sooner in these houses, and it shows up as fewer fills over a winter rather than a slightly smaller monthly bill.

A tighter house changes how an oil burner or a propane furnace breathes, so we look before we seal. An older boiler in the basement draws its combustion air from the room and sends its exhaust up a chimney, and when the basement rim and the attic are sealed, less air comes in to replace what goes up the flue. Around a chimney we use sheet metal and fire-rated sealant, never foam.

Many oil and propane households here are also weighing a heat pump. The order matters. New York’s heat pump program is moving to reward, and from 2028 require, a sealed and insulated house before it pays for a heat pump, so insulate first. A house that loses less heat also needs a smaller heat pump to keep it warm, and the equipment quote goes down with it.

We seal before we insulate

Insulation slows heat moving through a surface. It does nothing about air moving through a gap. Blow the attic of a split-entry to depth and leave the basement rim, the pipe holes and the landing wall open, and the boiler keeps heating air that leaves the house as fast as it did before.

In a Blooming Grove split-entry the sequence runs from the bottom up: seal the rim joist around the lower level, including the section over the front landing; seal the pipe, wire and flue penetrations in the lower-level ceiling; check the boiler’s air supply and the chimney; go to the attic and seal the top plates, the hatch, the bath fan housing and the wiring holes; baffle the low eaves; then blow the attic to depth.

NYSERDA’s Comfort Home program pays $2,500 toward sealing and insulating the attic and rim joist, $3,000 if walls and floors are added, and $2,000 more toward ENERGY STAR windows, through a NYSERDA-approved Comfort Home contractor. What opens the door is the electric bill: it is for market-rate homes of one to four units that pay the System Benefits Charge. Comfort Home is open in 2026 and closes when the new utility programs start around January 2027, so a homeowner who wants Comfort Home money should not wait.

If your income falls under Orange County’s EmPower+ limits, NYSERDA’s EmPower+ program can pay for air sealing and insulation at no cost up to $14,000 for lower-income households, or half the cost up to $7,000 for moderate-income households, through an EmPower+ contractor, and renters can apply. For a single person the lines are $51,675 or less for the no-cost tier and under $68,900 for the half-cost tier; for four people, $80,160 and $106,880.

These programs pay through their own participating contractors, so check eligibility and the approved contractor lists on the MyEnergy portal before you sign. The federal insulation tax credit (Section 25C) ended for work placed in service after 31 December 2025, so there is no federal insulation credit on a 2026 job, and New York has no state tax credit for insulation. Code and climate in Blooming Grove

For an existing house the rules are lighter. Unaltered portions need not comply, and no blower door test is required when you insulate an existing home, although a wall or roof cavity opened during the work must be filled to full depth. ENERGY STAR recommends R-60 for an uninsulated attic in this climate and R-49 where 3 to 4 inches are already there.
